The department of Economics of G.V.M’s G.G.P.R. College of Commerce and Economics, Ponda-Goa, in association with The Directorate of Higher Education (DHE), Government of Goa, Porvorim-Goa, organized a Five days State level short term course on “Data Analysis & Statistical Techniques Using R Software from 12th December to 17th December 2019. The main objective of the short term course was to enhance the analytical & application skills of college teachers & research scholars from Commerce, Management, Economics and Computer Applications, fields and to encourage participants to learn a new Software Programming language.
The Resource persons for the short term course using R-Software were Dr. Amiya Bhowmick, Asstt. Professor, Department of Mathematics, Institute of Chemical Technology, Matunga Mumbai and Shri. Venkata Reddy, Data Scientist, Machine Learning Trainer, co-founder Statinfer, Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh. The short term course was inaugurated at the hands of Dr. P.K. Sudarsan, Prof. Department of Economics, Vice Dean (Academics), Goa Business School, Goa University. Shri. Kaustubh Kamat, Asstt. Director (Academics), DHE, Govt. of Goa. Shri. Bhaskar Khandeparkar, Chairman, Working Committee , GVMs, were also present for the inaugural function.
At the outset, Principal Shri. P. M. Bhende welcomed the gathering and introduced the main theme of the course. He further highlighted the need to learn new skills for research by college teachers through such short term courses and he also expressed the desire to have more follow up courses in R in association with the DHE Govt. of Goa. Dr. Geetanjali C. Achrekar Assoc. Prof. in Economics, introduced the chief guest of the function Dr.P.K.Sudarsan and the co-cordinator of the said course Shri. Sameer Patil,Asstt. Prof. in Computer Applications introduced the resource person Dr. Amiya Bhowmick, to the audience. This was followed by a floral welcome of the dignitaries. In his inaugural address as chief guest Prof. Dr. P.K. Sudarsan stressed the need for using quantitative techniques and selecting the right tools and models while conducting research at the Doctoral level. He also mentioned that there are many softwares for data analysis but research scholars should take care while selecting the right statistical tools and data sets during their research. The inaugural function concluded with a vote of thanks by Vice-Principal Dr. M. M. Chikodikar.
Soon after the inaugural the first resource person Dr. Amiya Bhowmick started his technical session on Introduction to R and R- studio. The topics covered during his sessions were Data import-export, statistical distributions, testing of hypothesis problems, ANOVA and other related tests . These sessions were covered on 12th and 13th December 2019.
From 14th December till 17th December 2019 – the second resource person Shri.Venkata Reddy Konasani conducted sessions on Regression Analysis, Correlation, Logistic regression models, confusion matrix, multicollinearity and time series analysis. Both the resource persons took in-depth analysis of the topics assigned to them.
The short term course concluded with a valedictory function on 17th December 2019. Dr. R.V. Gaonkar, Senior consultant, RUSA, Govt. of Goa, presided as chief guest of the function. Principal Shri.P.M.Bhende, introduced the Chief guest Dr. R.V.Gaonkar, by calling him the pioneer of achieving College Autonomy in Higher Education in Goa, by making Chowgule College, Margao, the first autonomous college in Goa, under him as Principal. He further expressed his gratitude to the chief guest for his guidance and expertise in technical matters of RUSA, as a Senior Consultant for the Govt. of Goa and acknowledged his support to all the Colleges which are assisted under RUSA. After a floral welcome and the course summary report presentation by the compere Miss. Roohi Khan , the chief guest addressed the gathering.
In his address to the participants, Chief guest Dr. R.V.Gaonkar, stressed that the purpose of having such workshops in association with DHE was to encourage college teachers and research scholars to learn new techniques of data analysis. Further he said the participant teachers should transfer their new knowledge to the students and focus on how students can be made employable as per the market demand. He congratulated the college for successfully organizing the short term course. Dr. Geetanjali C.Achrekar, Course coordinator proposed the vote of thanks. In total 29 participants across colleges in Goa attended the course.

The Coordinator for the short term was Dr. Geetanjali C.Achrekar, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, GVM’s GGPR College of Commerce and Economics, and course co-coordinator was Shri. Sameer Patil, Asstt. Professor, Department of Computer Applications.
The inaugural function was compered by Ms. Shruti Kunkolienkar, Asstt. Professor, Department of Computer Applications and the valedictory function was compered by Ms. Roohi Khan, Asstt. Professor, Department of Economics.
